Presentation

Creation 2019

Known for her exploration of 1960s postmodern American dance, and in particular for her work with Anna Halprin, Anne Collod plunges into the prolific work of choreographers Ruth Saint-Denis (1877-1968) and Ted Shawn (1891-1972). Considered, in the early 20th century, as the founders of modern dance in the United States, alongside Isadora Duncan and Loïe Füller, they were the first to take an interest in the dances of Eastern Asia and India, which they made considerable use of to nurture their creation of a new type of dance.

What interests Anne Collod here is the question of the utopias of otherness and the representations in genre and culture proposed by these two choreographers. By reactivating three Indian-inspired solos by Ruth Saint-Denis and fragments of group pieces by Ted Shawn, Moving alternatives opens a space for dialogue taken over by six dancers, who are themselves choreographers, and confronts multiple danced versions and points of view that question the effects of these gestures from the past on our present-day representations.
