Recognised as one of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s most iconic choreographies, Drumming Live was written to the eponymous, minimalistic percussion score by Steve Reich. Starting with a single rhythmic motif, the music unfolds into a torrent of textures including drums, brass and voice. In the dance, the choreographic complexity was devised according to the composition, where the musicians through minor tempo accelerations push their unison out of joint. A single movement phrase becomes the foundation of an infinite number of variations across time and space. When the music and the bodies stop, the audience eventually realizes what they just witnessed: a wave of pure dance and pure sound, a vortex of vital energy.
