Following its triumph on European scenes, the acrobatic ballet of Austrian choreographer Florentina Holzinger is finally arriving in France. Carried by an all-women casting, TANZ questions the brutality of choreographic heritage.
With TANZ, Florentina Holzinger continues her reflection on the history of ballet, started in 2017 with Apollon, a feminist reinterpretation of George Balanchine’s Apollon musagète. This time around, it’s the romantic ballet La Sylphide (Filippo Taglioni, 1832) that serves as a starting point for a virulent reconsideration of archetypes and traditions. On stage, twelve women between 20 and 80 years old, stemming from different choreographic cultures, are led by Beatrice Cordua: the first ballerina to dance The Rite of Spring naked, in 1972. Here, she gives an “action ballet class” taking her partners into a dizzying acrobatic performance that takes after both supernatural ritual and pop parody. Muscled bodies and fight scenes unfold in front of a camera whose live broadcasting allow for changes of focus. A critic of the industry of the gaze and a show that questions the cult of beauty.
