Khalid Benghrib forages through his childhood memories, those he has kept of the Haal transe ritual, entrusted to him in the past by his grandmothers, in Morocco. Far from reproducing the actual ritual on stage, an inevitably vain undertaking, he digs deep into his own reactions to it, into the joy and passion of it, into that always uncertain physical process where dance, music, vocal performance and percussion alternate with sensuality, bodily power and rhythmic frenzies. And so he invents a choreographed musical fresco embodied by nine dancers, where the Gnawa fairyland – 'black' brotherhoods – and the Hmadchas – 'white' brotherhoods come together in an imaginary fusion. No devil, no spirits and no simulation, but an intense and infectious flow of vibrations and colours, lines and energies, emanating from the stage and spreading through the room.
