American choreographer Trajal Harrell summons Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams in order to imagine a tonic and invigorating celebration of diversity. A work that owes as much to voguing as it does to Greek tragedy.
Maggie is Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, a roughed-up but tough figure, left behind but liberated. Her energy floods Trajal Harrell’s new creation, a joyful and frenzied blending of genres. Mic in hand, the American choreographer acts as the master of a ceremony that celebrates diversity and self-affirmation. With him, ten performers use a vernacular that borrows as much from postmodern dance as from voguing. A ravishing fusion that takes after fashion shows and parties, on a soundtrack where electro, pop and classical music rub together. With a militant lightness and by embracing the memories of one of modern theatre’s most famous characters, Maggie the Cat tackle themes of power, gender, belonging and exclusion. This work is the first part of the Porca Miseria trilogy, inspired by three feisty women picked from literature and History.
