In a gymnasium turned welcome center, Julie Deliquet orchestrates the cohabitation between social workers and roughed up welfare recipients. Adapted from American filmmaker Frederick Wiseman’s documentary, Welfare weaves interlacing stories and imaginations in a human comedy both absurd and burlesque. Opening show of the 77th Festival d’Avignon.
Welfare is firstly a 1973 documentary by Frederick Wiseman that delves into the heart of the American social welfare system, and a patient observation of the daily lives of social workers and those they try to help. People without jobs or homes, ill, fragile, or victims of violence. The camera captures their waiting, their words. These exchanges, whether sad, funny, strange or dramatic are today at the heart of Julie Deliquet’s play. On Wiseman’s suggestion, the director imagined this Welfare, her fourth adaptation from a cinematographic work. The play is set in the gymnasium of a public school turned into a welcome center during the last days of 1973. For a day, people and stories meet, a community canteen and emergency accommodation get prepared. A world of resistance comes alive.
