Here, sounds become an almost animalistic and immediate expression of sensual and psychic movements.” Arnold Schönberg
A major contemporary work, Arnold Schönberg’s Pierrot lunaire marked the beginning of atonal music at the start of the last century. Marlene Monteiro Freitas took hold of the musical poems and placed a stoic Pierrot, played by singer Sofia Jernberg, at the heart of the action. Dressed in a purple priest robe and a pink beanie, she stands feverishly, awaiting the improbable installation of the instrumentalists and the conductor. True to her universe marked by the excessiveness of carnivals, the Cap Verdean artist composes a kaleidoscopic play through precise movements. Basking in bright lights, the quadri-frontal stage opens multiple perspectives and as many possible shared readings.
