Part of the musical work of Igor Stravinsky, Sacrificial Dance tells the story of a young girl destined for death according to a sacrificial rite that unleashes the seasonal forces of the earth. Inspired by the expressive rhythms of Tswana people’s curing dances, the choreography reveals a quick and animalistic body language carried by Philip Meyer’s musical composition. Songs and rhythms cross through the minimalist space together, alongside stealthy laughter.
Dada Masilo’s passion for great classical ballets is no secret. Neither is the explosive interpretation he makes of them, in order to denounce gender stereotypes: forced marriage, homophobia, subjugation of women, as well as domestic violence. Here, the choreographer anchors the vigor of dance deep within his Bostwanese heritage and questions the notion of sacrifice in the light of our world.
