This Antigone is Ukrainian. Her story, inspired by the one Sophocles told, takes place on the rubbles of a city that just got out of violent clashes, and whose future is to be invented. Leaving the usual storytelling of the myth, this version directed by Lucie Berelowitsch focuses on what is out of frame and that underpins it: the relation to law, to the family, to the stranger, to the revolt. The Dakh Daughters, a cabaret-punk group of Ukrainian musicians and comedians, perform as the choir. The Ukrainian language, that of the intimate, coexists with Russian, language of the City and official meetings, while the soothsayer Tirésias expresses himself in French. In the maze of doubts and oppositions, the fratricidal struggles and the quest for justice, Antigone corners the living once again: we must build, rebuild, now, but how?
