A Pina Bausch Foundation, École des Sables & Sadler’s Wells production.
Born out of a collaboration between the Pina Bausch Foundation, L’École des Sables and London’s Sadler’s Wells, this two-part program combines three significant figures of dancing.
In 1973, then aged 33, Pina Bausch founded the Tanztheater Wuppertal, where Malou Airaudo was a memorable performer from the start. Around the same time, in 1977, Maurice Béjart named Germaine Acogny director of Mudra Africa in Dakar. Later, she founded L’École des Sables in Toubab Dialow, which will go on to leave its mark on African continental dance.
common ground[s], by Germaine Acogny and Malou Airaudo celebrates the vocation to dance and activism of the two renowned artists that are now well into their seventies.
The recreation of Sacre du Printemps (Rite of Spring) gathers around thirty performers from fourteen different African countries, under the artistic direction of Josephine Ann Endicott, Jorge Puerta Armenta and Clémentine Deluy, long-term dancers at Tanztheater Wuppertal.
